I’ve often debated the question, “Can one be taught to write?” The way I see it is any relatively intelligent individual can be taught a “task.” We’ve all seen the guy on some TV talent show playing piano. His practical skills are good because he hits all the right keys. The same goes for dancing and singing, etc. Mechanically, everything is done right. The dancer performs the steps properly, while the singer hits all the notes. They go through all the right motions.
However, can these people be called great? Not unless they have immense passion along with the technical skill. And, that is something you cannot fake. Writing, singing, dancing, acting, painting, etc. are all very creatively oriented pursuits. In order to be creative, you must have imagination, originality, resourcefulness – and - be inspired to create. It takes enormous emotion to create with the kind of passion needed to be truly great. I have 20+ years of writing experience, but it was the infinite amount of passion, enthusiasm and intense emotion I felt when writing or even thinking about writing, that transformed me from a person who writes, into a writer. I didn’t consider writing as a profession until it was almost too late. Writing was one of the rare, few things in life I never got tired of, or gave up on, even if I didn’t write more than a letter for years. There was always something inside that compelled me to write! Even so, I had major concerns and hesitations about being a professional writer. I knew early on, I did not want to write a book, novel, or fiction of any kind. What’s more, I became panic-stricken whenever I heard the term “technical writing.” I, like most people, had a very wrong idea about technical writing. I assumed it meant science, math, physics, medicine, and other disciplines that had terminology I couldn’t even pronounce. Furthermore, I was anything but a technically minded person. It’s funny how the misconceptions we had often become the things we wind up doing (or liking) the best. When I seriously became interested in writing as a profession, I began taking steps to start a home-based, freelance writing business. Despite researching and following every instruction to the letter, it didn’t take long before I had a major epiphany. No one in their right mind was going to pay me a dime to write anything more than their name, based on my word alone. I had no credentials, no writing samples or clips. What’s more, up to this point I had never even been critiqued by a professional writer. I honestly didn’t know if my writing “talent” was all in my head, or something I thought I could do well, because “mommy and daddy” said I could! So, in 2005, fate stepped in, and I wound up going to school, online. First, I earned my associate degree, in business administration, graduating with a 3.75 GPA. And, finally, in 2010, I graduated, magna cum laude, with a degree in professional and technical writing. Shortly after, I also became a Certified Professional Resume Writer, CPRW, and now freelance on a full-time basis. The subject areas I would like to write about are: resumes, online education, education at 40+, work search for 40+, mental health issues and disorders such as adult ADD, depression, bipolar, etc. psychology, criminology, forensic technology, business start-ups, book reviews, art history, esp. Impressionist, business management, business communication, business ethics and law, finding bargains, everything about cosmetics, how to purchase “new” textbooks for bargain prices, self-employment vs. traditional work, sleep deprivation and anything else you can think of!
