What makes me an exceptional copywriter? Before answering this question, I decided to do a little research to find out what others thought the necessary requirements are for an outstanding copywriter. Imagine my surprise when I discovered, not only do I possess every one of the qualifications editors deemed necessary for excellent copywriters, but they are some of the same qualities I have often bemoaned as being plagues in my life!
First, I am an insatiable reader with a curious and creative mind. Walking into the local library, I often have difficulty finding a book I have not already read. This has made me very popular with Barnes and Noble as my order forms tend to run into the hundreds of dollars. However, it makes me very unpopular with moving companies. On my last move, sixty-five cartons contained books! Books I have yet to read, books on skills I have learned or those yet to be experienced, books outlining projects that now crowd my to-do list. Classics, history, politics, religion, poetry, gardening, sewing, book binding, paper making, fashion, home repair, organizing, cooking - you name it, I’ve read about, researched it and tried it! Fiction or non-fiction, it makes no difference. If it’s in print, it’s passed through my life at some point. All of this reading and experimenting leads to the next affliction - multiple perspectives. Decision making becomes thought provoking as my mind crowds with all views of an issue before arriving at a conclusion. For example, a novel about the civil war brings up questions of where I would stand on the issues of the day. As a southern belle, how would I react to the disruption of my elegant lifestyle? As a politician, where would I stand on the right of secession and a state’s ability to forge its own destiny in the face of federal opposition? As a mother, would I have the strength of character to stoically send my son’s into battle? As a cotton farmer, how would I resolve the issue of slave labor versus hired labor? As a slave, how would I handle the loss of control over my own life and the feeling of worthlessness forced upon me by the ruling class of the day? As a human being, how would I reconcile slavery with compassion? How did both Northern and Southern Christians relate slavery to Biblical teachings? North versus South, state versus federal, slavery versus freedom, humanity versus war, history versus current events - one story, so may perspectives. Interestingly, this dissection of a novel has given me the ability to identify with those of similar beliefs and also with those of opposing views. It enables me to communicate clearly and concisely on both sides of almost any issue. Then there is the curse of a constantly crowded to-do list. Continuously moving in multiple directions at one time, I often wonder how I manage to complete any task and do so in a timely manner. That is until I look around and marvel at all the knowledge I have gained, skills I have mastered and projects I have completed. Persistently working is, in reality, effectively multitasking. It turns out that possessing a quick mind, a clear eye for detail, compassion for others and a voracious thirst for knowledge really aren’t the plagues I made them out to be. In reality, they are the exact qualities needed to be both an exceptional copywriter and a contestant on Jeopardy!
